Ben Allison Group (through July 19)
“For about 15 years the bassist Ben Allison has been a bandleader-composer of reliable intelligence and modest but meaningful surprises. Most of the musicians he has assembled here — the multireedist Ted Nash, the guitarist Steve Cardenas and the drummer Rudy Royston — are regular partners. One, the trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, is a more recent collaborator, and an all-around compelling addition.” (Nate Chinen-NYT)

212-581-3080, birdlandjazz.com;
At 8:30 and 11 p.m. / $40 cover, with a $10 minimum.

The Moth StorySLAM!
“Ten stories. Three teams of judges. One winner. The outrageously (and deservedly) popular storytelling series pits local yarn spinners against one another, challenging them to deliver an impressive tale based on a specific theme. Tonight’s theme is anxiety.

Get in line early, as spots for raconteurs and spectators alike go quickly.” (TONY)

Zach Deputy
On his new release Another Day (Eusonia Records, 2011), Zach Deputy demonstrates his extraordinary ability to perform and record in multiple contexts and conveys the sensibilities of a mature singer/songwriter. Another Day offers another look at Zach Deputy and seeks to help him cross over into other audiences.

Rich with ballads and mid-tempo songs, the music on this recording is best described as soulful rhythm and blues, with flavors of Al Green, Taj Mahal and Stevie Wonder emerging in the swells, changes and modulations of the music, in the voice and even in the lyrical content. The record will appeal to fans of contemporary artists like Jack Johnson and Amos Lee, but the origins of the style and feel remain classic.

The first, “On the Nature of Things,” is a balancing act created and performed by three company members. “The Inconsistent Pedaler” (Program B) is a collaboration with the Israeli fiction writer Etgar Keret and the filmmaker Shira Geffen, revolving around a girl and her time-bending bicycle.” (Burke-NYT)

PlusOne:
Camera Obscura w/ Laura Cantrell
With John Peel as an early champion, Glasgow’s Camera Obscura are fondly regarded by many as one of the UK’s finest acts; having over the years built up a dedicated following with must-have records and tours throughout Europe, USA, Mexico, Australia and South East Asia. Their 2006 album, Let’s Get Out of This Country (2006), was to prove pivotal for the band, taking them out of the shadows and to long-deserved new heights. You might not find heartache as enchanting as this anywhere else, stated All Music Guide in a familiar glowing review.

Their first album for their new label, My Maudlin Career, was a roaring success, gaining the band further new fans, all wooed by lead singer Tracyanne’s ability to still turn out maudlin torch songs with apparent ease (Pitchfork, Best New Music).

Having retreated to work on a forthcoming album and take time out of the limelight, this special show marks their first in the city for almost three years and comes after the band play SXSW in Austin, Texas.
