MoMA Nights, With Ex Hex
“Ex Hex, a new rock trio fronted by Mary Timony — the riot-grrrl veteran of Wild Flag and Helium — is rich with jangling guitars and Ms. Timony’s echoing, stoic vocals. The band’s track “Hot and Cold” is chipper with inflections of grunge and punk and boasts a kitschy, food-obsessed music video. Ex Hex is set to release its full-length album sometime this year. “ (Anderson-NYT)

HERSHEY FELDER IN “MAESTRO BERNSTEIN: A PLAY WITH MUSIC”
Hershey Felder, critically acclaimed master entertainer and virtuoso pianist brings one of America’s greatest musical legends to life in Maestro Bernstein. Conductor, composer, pianist, author, teacher, librettist, television star, and composer of West Side Story, Candide, On the Town, and Wonderful Town, Bernstein pushed all boundaries to become the world’s first serious musical media superstar. Felder combines first-person narrative with the compositions of Bernstein and others to draw us deeply into a fascinating life—a life filled with tragedy and triumph…and music.

The Boston Globe wrote “in his finely wrought portrait, Felder captures Bernstein’s restless energy, his combination of self-confidence and vulnerability, and his flair for drama.” The Chicago Sun-Times raves “you will walk out of the theater realizing you’ve barely breathed for the duration of this astonishing musical and theatrical transmigration of souls.”

David Sanborn / Smooth Cruise
“A sticky residue of pop success clings to this alto saxophonist, whose sweet-tart sound is unmistakable within just a note or two. He has lately been making emphatic forays into the soul-jazz that formed him — consult his solid work on a new album by the vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson — but he’ll probably be playing to broader expectations on the Smooth Cruise, a two-hour dinner jaunt around the southern tip of Manhattan.” (Chinen-NYT)
Departs at 6:30 and 9:30 p.m., / $55 in advance, $65 at the gate, $80 with buffet.

PlusOne:
Jon Hopkins
“It’s been more than a year since this talented British producer, who has worked with Brian Eno, Massive Attack, Coldplay, and Herbie Hancock, released “Immunity,” a stunning techno album. Since then, the demand to hear his expansive, pulsing, thoughtful tracks hasn’t wavered; this summer, Hopkins has hit nearly every major festival in Europe, and this week he’s in town on his way to Chicago for the Pitchfork Music Festival, later this month.” (NewYorker)

futurism_landing_depero
Guggenheim Museum: ‘Italian Futurism, 1909-1944: Reconstructing the Universe’ (through Sept. 1)
“This epic, beautifully designed exhibition may be one of the more thorough examinations of modernism’s most obnoxious and conflicted art movement that you are likely to see. Awash in the manifestoes that its members regularly fired off, it follows Futurism through to its end with the death of its founder, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, in 1944. It covers the Futurist obsessions with speed, war, machines and, finally, flight and the aerial views it made possible. And the show highlights relatively unknown figures like the delightful Fortunato Depero and Benedetta Cappa, Marinetti’s wife. 1071 Fifth Avenue, at 89th Street, 212-423-3500, guggenheim.org.
