In five weeks, Holley created over 100 works, including sculpture made largely from objects found on the property. Titles of the work—such as “Fragile like a Child,” “Working to Loosen our Chains, Battered,” “Blood from the Fields Back Home,” and “I Can Always Fly”—read like lines from an epic poem describing struggle, defeat, yet resolute constancy and grace. Born in Jim Crow-era Birmingham, Alabama in 1950, the seventh of his mother’s 27 children, Holley experienced a …

Long Island / Sat, May 01, 2021 – Sun, Jun 06, 2021
The Arts Center at Duck Creek is pleased to announce “Down and Dirty,” a two-person exhibit featuring sculpture by artists Bonnie Rychlak and Jeanne Silverthorne. Jeanne Silverthorne and Bonnie Rychlak create sculptures that share a tale of disruption and playful decrepitude. When they met in the 1980s, New York was suffering from a historic market crash. Still, the city was teeming with resourceful artists. These conditions shaped Rychlak and Silverthorne’s approach to making art, and …
A tale of collective ingenuity and individual perseverance in the shadow of national crisis is the subject of “Lewis Hine: The WPA National Research Project Photographs, 1936-37,” on view at Howard Greenberg Gallery. The Great Depression ravaged the United States in the 1930s, producing extreme levels of poverty and unemployment with a deep and penetrating social pessimism to match. Whereas some photographic endeavors of the time sought to document the misery and misfortune of those …

“This Memorial Day Weekend, explore the city’s newest park and eat your way through outdoor food events.
While we’ve been taking advantage of the last few weeks’ warm weather to act like it’s summer, it’s finally—FINALLY—here. And, if you find yourself hanging in the five boroughs instead of skipping town this weekend, don’t worry about FOMO: there is plenty happening in town to keep you occupied.
So, whether you’re game to explore a new floating park, take a dance class outdoors, or maybe just stuff your face with a dozen different types of ribs, we’ve got you covered. Read on for nine actually fun things to do, eat, and see this weekend in New York City.
Weekend-long Greenpoint With NYC’s enormous selection of restaurants, it’s not often we see openings that are true vanguards. But luckily, we’ve got a unicorn with Fulgurances, Laundromat which opened this week in Greenpoint in—you guessed it—a former laundromat. The original restaurant concept, which was created in Paris, allows chefs on the rise to cook for a months-long residency before they launch their own places (a restaurant incubator if you will). And NYC’s inaugural chef is the talented Victoria Blamey, formerly of Gotham Bar & Grill. Expect her to serve a highly seasonal, multi-course menu, inspired by her work in top kitchens across the globe. Cost: Prix-fixe menu from $80
Friday, May 28, 11 am–7 pm World Trade Center While we eagerly await the return of Smorgasburg in Williamsburg and Prospect Park, there is another way to get your fix. This Friday—and every Friday throughout the summer—head to Fulton St. at The Oculus for five of the market’s best vendors. While the lineup may change week-to-week, you can expect favorites like pizza from Wood Fired Edibles, small batch ice cream from Bona Bona, and barbecue tacos from Carlitos Barbecue Taqueria. Cost: Free to enter, food costs vary
Weekend-long Midtown East Another sure sign NYC is on the rebound? The opening of jaw-dropping date-night spots like Le Pavillon. The new restaurant from star chef Daniel Boulud, located inside brand-new One Vanderbilt Avenue, has a menu that focuses on elegant preparations of vegetables and seafood; think red wine-glazed monkfish or roasted lobster served with a watercress veloute. Equally stunning are the interiors: the space is a soaring 11,000 square-feet and filled with live trees and even a garden path. Cost: Three-course prix fixe from $125
Weekend Long Dumbo NYC does not lack for food markets and halls, but few can match the depth (or views!) of Time Out Market New York. And, after a long, pandemic-related closure, the space is finally reopening just in time for the long weekend. To celebrate, there will be live music and performances through Sunday, including bossa nova singer Alexia Bomtempo, and stilt walkers and sword swallowers from Coney Island USA. Of course, there’s plenty to eat, too: new vendors include buzzy spots like Wayla, Fornino, and Sugar Hill Creamery. Cost: Free to enter, food costs varyhttps://5e3f2bfc18fb59cd9cb8356dd993cc1e.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-38/html/container.html
Weekend-long Meatpacking District Anyone who has driven on the West Side Highway the last few years has seen a curious object rising out of the water at Pier 55. As one of our most anticipated happenings of 2021, that buildout is now complete and the structure, dubbed Little Island, is finally open to the public. And while you may be tempted to go just for the selfies, stay for everything else the park offers: there are over 350 species of trees, flowers, and shrubs; a 687-seat amphitheater; a central plaza with seating and plenty of food vendors; and, of course, a lush lawn perfect for lazy summer nights. Note that while you must reserve free tickets if you arrive at 12 PM or later, the park requires no reservations if you pop by in the morning (and it opens at an eye-rubbing 6 AM). And for some of the best views of the park from afar (and a summer cocktail), head to the newly reopened roof at Gansevoort Meatpacking. Cost: Free
Friday, May 28, 3 pm–4 pm Fordham Manor Curious about dances like flexn, litefeet, or hip hop? This Friday, head to Poe Park in the Bronx for an event with It’s Showtime NYC; the dancers will teach an hour-long dance class where students of all ages can learn the basics to these and other street and club dances. The class will be held entirely outdoors to accommodate for social distancing. Cost: Free, with advanced registration
Saturday, May 29, 9 am Astoria Make your summer kickoff a little sweeter by heading to the newest location of the beloved doughnut shop, Dough, in Queens. Their first store in NYC’s most diverse borough will pay homage to its Astoria home with the premiere of a new flavor: the Cherry Greek Yogurt Doughnut with sour cherry infused yogurt parfait, chopped walnuts, rose water, and mint. The grand opening begins at 9am and the first 500 customers will get a free t-shirt when purchasing a six-box of doughnuts. Cost: From $4.50
Saturday, May 29, 12 pm–4 pm Snug Harbor The official start of summer means many things, but the most important? Duh, barbecue. This Saturday, grab a ferry to Staten Island for the 5 Boro PicNYC: an afternoon celebration of ribs, barbecue sauce, and even locally grown produce. Highlights will include the Rib King NYC competition, featuring over a dozen contestants; samplings from the winners of the Sauce King 2020 competition; and tons of craft cider and beer vendors. Bring your own picnic blankets, chairs, and umbrellas: the event will go on regardless of the weather. And for even more barbecue options, be sure to check out our list of NYC’s best spots. Cost: Tickets from $55 per person
Weekend-long Sunset Park If you’re not leaving town for the long weekend, there may be nowhere better to staycation than Industry City. The giant complex is hosting a wealth of events between Friday and Sunday and almost all of them require no advanced tickets or registration. Start the weekend off with live salsa and Brazilian music on Friday night, then pop back on Saturday to 34th St. at 3rd Avenue, where CarPark participants will display their finest vintage cars along with morning coffee. At noon, you can head back inside and check out All Love Mkt, a pop-up shop featuring 25 Black makers and manufacturers. Of course, any time you get hungry, there are plenty of options at the Food Hall, including Burger Joint, One Girl Cookies, and Table 87. Cost: Free to enter
