Pre Covid-19 we searched the internet everyday looking for the very best of What’s Happening, primarily on Manhattan’s WestSide, so that you didn’t have to.” We made it as easy as 1-2-3. Covid has required some changes.
Bit of a cutback on today’s post. This blogger is on holiday in Costa Rica – first holiday post Covid!

If you’re looking for the best things to do in NYC this week, or even for today, there are tons of fun options. Check out this year’s colorful Orchid Show at NYBG, catch the Shorts Festival at Nitehawk and the annual Outsider Art Fair! For more ideas, scroll down to see this week’s best things to do in NYC.
Make sure to check respective venues before you head out to make sure they’re open.“
Once a week, after closing time, 10 people convene at the city’s oldest magic shop, Tannen’s, for a cozy evening of prestidigitation by the young and engaging Noah Levine. The shelves are crammed with quirky devices; there’s a file cabinet behind the counter, a mock elephant in the corner and bins of individual trick instructions in plastic covers, like comic books or sheet music. The charm of Levine’s show is in how well it fits the environment of this magic-geek chamber of secrets. As he maneuvers cards, eggs, cups and balls with aplomb, he talks shop, larding his patter with tributes to routines like the Stencel Aces and the Vernon Boat Trick—heirlooms of his trade that he gently polishes and displays for our amazement.
If you loved the music and cool jazz scene in Disney and Pixar’s movie Soul, you’ll want to make a beeline to The National Jazz Museum in Harlem, which has been transformed into the film’s Half Note jazz club. Showcasing incredible artifacts from major players in Harlem’s jazz scene, including Duke Ellington’s white grand piano, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis’ tenor saxophone, a player piano and a working 78rpm Victrola, “The Soul of Jazz: An American Adventure” highlights the many different cultures and creators who influenced this genre
New Yorkers are currently rushing to The Shed to walk through a giant, tent-like space that’s actually a grounded balloon made up of colorful, recycled plastic grocery bags. The installation, dubbed “Museo Aero Solar,” is part of Argentinian artist Tomás Saraceno’s large-scale exhibit “Particular Matter(s),” and it’s totally worth traveling to the West side of town for. The piece is meant to call out to humans’ impact on the environment. It is, in fact, a project by Saraceno’s own Aerocene Foundation, a global non-profit organization dedicated to the development of fuel-free flying. Just as the rest of the exhibit, “Museo Aero Solar” is a visually striking installation that—of course—makes for great Instagram fodder (although social media certainly doesn’t do the piece justice). You’ve got until April 17 to go see it with your own eyes.

(3/7-3/13) “Looking for what to do in NYC this week and weekend? The city continues to bounce back. As Covid rates drop, mask requirements and proof of vaccines are going. Expect a revitalized city this week and this weekend, with new restaurants, festivals, pop ups, and all kind of other things to do in NYC this week.’

The city is just beginning to warm up and thaw out from its winter slumber with some incredible NYC events in March, including St. Patrick’s Day and Women’s History Month. For sure, we’ll all be heading to the best Irish pubs in the city, but there’s more to do from the Asia Week art show to the Orchid Show at NYBG. And finally, we can start fantasizing about packing away that puffy coat and gearing up for the best things to do in April and the best things to do in spring.”
The Orchid Show at The New York Botanical Garden will transport visitors into a dreamy kaleidoscope of colors with designs by floral designer Jeff Leatham. Every year, the Orchid Show exhibits thousands of species of beautiful blossoming orchids and it’s one of the best NYC events in February and one of the best things to do in The Bronx. Macy’s has its Flower Show, which is worth seeing in its own right, but the NYBG’s orchid show has been running for 19 years and has only gotten better.
The Outsider Art Fair returns this year for its 30th edition, hosting international exhibitors displaying works from more than 60 self-taught artists pushing the boundaries of creativity. Don’t miss an exhibition of psychedelic art called “Field Trip: Psychedelic Solution, 1986 – 1995,” which is filled to the brim with work from the likes of pioneering underground cartoonist/Zap Comix artist Spain Rodriguez, R Crumb, Robert Williams, Rick Griffin, S. Clay Wilson, longtime Zappa collaborator Bruce Bickford along with original artwork related to Sixties bands like Jefferson Airplane, Buffalo Springfield and The Who. You’ll even see the original drawing that spawned the Grateful Dead’s logo along with the origin story as well as preparatory drawings for the Jerry Garcia solo album “Compliments Of” from 1974 by artist Victor Moscoso. You’ll also see several solo presentations, including Native American ledger drawings at Donald Ellis (New York); drawings by the legendary musician Daniel Johnston (1962-2019) at Electric Lady Studios (New York), and classic art brut with the OAF debut of London’s The Gallery of Everything. Also, the fair continues its longstanding relationship with the world’s top ateliers or “workshops” that serve artists with developmental or physical disabilities.
There will be free performances, discussions and civic events inside the David Rubenstein Atrium as well as Choose-What-You-Pay ticketing for the new edition of Lincoln Center’s American Songbook: “A World of Voices.” The free events will all take place at the David Rubenstein Atrium, including: The People Sing!: Celebrating the Centenary of Howard Zinn, The Dance Floor: Orquesta Broadway, The Spanglish Dream, Lundú, A Deeper Listen: Concert and Meditation, The Dance Floor: K-Pop with DJ Peach, LADAMA , The NextGen National Vocal Competition, A Rare Grooves Listening Party with DJ Ben Boogz and more. Lincoln Center is also offering choose-what-you-pay tickets to the return of its American Songbook: “A World of Voices,” which showcases nine performers from Honduras, Mexico, India, Guinea, China, Sudan, Venezuela, Tunisia, and Guatemala whose respective heritages inform their creative expression whether it be through musical theater, pop, Western and Eastern classical, rock, jazz or folk.
