Everything Fun You Can Do in NYC This Weekend

New restaurants, wine bars, art installations, and more.

By Juliet IzonThrillist

“On top of all of the cool activities happening this winter, NYC has also pulled out all the stops for this weekend: there is a massive, glowing installation in Brooklyn, a new solo restaurant from one of the city’s best chefs, and a wine bar that is sure to become your favorite spot during these chilly months. Read on for everything fun you can eat, drink, and do this weekend in NYC.

And while Omicron seems to be on a—thankfully—downward spiral, don’t forget to be safe. Get boosted, wear a mask, and be kind to your fellow New Yorkers.”

Grab dinner at the first solo restaurant from a famed NYC chef

Weekend-long
Tribeca
In the last few years, chef Victoria Blamey has firmly established herself as one of NYC’s culinary stars. And, after stints helming the burners at legendary spots like Gotham Bar & Grill and Chumley’s, the chef is finally opening her own restaurant. Mena draws inspiration both from Blamey’s childhood in Santiago as well as her experience cooking in kitchens everywhere from Spain and Australia to the U.K. Standout dishes include a California squab served with buckwheat honey and fermented radicchio, and the hearty monkfish paired with adobo mezcal, wakame seaweed, and black quinoa.
Cost: Per person from $115

Weekend-long
East Village
Since opening 10 years ago, Nai has been one of the most beloved tapas spots in the city. So beloved, in fact, that they recently outgrew their original space and have moved into roomier digs just a few blocks away. The menu has also gotten a refresh: look out for new specialities like mushroom carpaccio with marcona almonds and manchego cheese, and mussels escabeche with potato chips and lemon mayo. To go alongside, there is a robust menu of wine and sherry-based cocktails. We love the intriguing Filipino Cover Band made with rainwater madeira, ube, wild mushroom, brown butter, coconut, and mole.
Cost: Tapas from $12

Weekend-long
Crown Heights
One of the pandemic’s greatest success stories is Ursula, a New Mexican cafe and bakery that often draws a crowd for its overstuffed and excellent breakfast burritos. Unfortunately, the small space the restaurant rented for the past year-and-a-half will no longer be available soon, which will leave the restaurant without a home. You can support them by contributing to their GoFundMe, and, of course, by buying lots of burritos, pastries, and orders of arroz con leche.
Cost: Burritos from $10

Settle in for a cocktail at a new wine bar from a beloved Italian restaurant

Friday, January 28 and Saturday, January 29
Nolita
Cozy Peasant has long been a favorite for date night, both for its candlelit ambiance and its stellar wood-fired cuisine. The space just became even more romantic, though, with the opening of Peasant Wine Bar, located in the restaurant’s former wine cellar. All of Italy’s 20 regions are represented in the wine list here, with special emphasis on “peasant” grapes of lesser-known varieties. You can also pair your tipples with plates of housemade charcuterie and ancient-grain sourdough breads.
Cost: Wines from $14 a glass

Celebrate our friends down under at this bar’s special event

Friday, January 28 and Saturday, January 29
Lower East Side
Actual Australia Day may be January 26, but if anyone can appreciate extended celebrations, we think it’s the Aussies. Head to craft cocktail bar Sonnyboy this Friday and Saturday for the tail end of their Celebration of Australia event, featuring Oz-inspired bites like Bourke Street Bakery’s sausage rolls, grilled prawns, and fish and chips, as well as $10 cocktails made with Australian liquors. It’s all for a good cause, as well: Sonnyboy is donating $1 from every cocktail to the Bridging The Gap Foundation; a charity that focuses on reducing inequality between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
Cost: Drinks from $10

Explore all the new food offerings at Rockefeller Center

Weekend-long
Rockefeller Center
Now that the holiday tourists have left, it’s an excellent time of year to explore one of Midtown’s most famous quarters. And, if you haven’t been in a while, you probably haven’t seen its remarkable glow up. Start by cozying up in a heated apres-skate chalet, where you can sip hot drinks like apple cider and Mexican-style hot chocolate. But, if you’re looking for something a bit harder, you can also swing by Other Half’s newly opened taproom, which has 12 draft lines, grab-and-go cans, and an outdoor biergarten. End your day with a bite at Lodi, which recently unveiled dinner service and a full bar program; don’t miss their Rockefeller Martini served with a side of pickles.
Cost: Free to enter

Check out a massive, glowing installation in Brooklyn

Weekend-long
Industry City
In recent years, Industry City has become a hotbed of interactive art, live music performances, and innovative artists’ studios. And the newest installation to come to the area, Jen Lewin’s touch-responsive The Pool, is absolutely worth a visit to this Brooklyn creative hub. The massive outdoor art piece, commissioned by The Collision Project, is composed of 100 color-changing pads, on which visitors are encouraged to dance, jump, and twirl. After you get your photo for the ‘gram, swing by the Food Hall for dinner; the outpost of Burger Joint is our favorite.
Cost: Free

Lunar New Year at the Garden
Through Feb. 13, Queens Botanical Garden, Flushing, Queens

The Queens Botanical Garden has three ways to celebrate Lunar New Year this year. On Feb. 5, they’ll host a special performance complete with lion dances, stories and more. Make the new year great by attending the best NYC events in January 2022 from concerts to new exhibitionsWritten by Shaye Weaver TONY

“Begin the new year on the right foot with our list of NYC events in January 2022 to plan your month. We’ve included the best events in January, from can’t-miss happenings to popular New York attractions. From new museum exhibits to celebrating Martin Luther King Day, check out these events and more sensational things to do in the winter.”

Here are a few of my faves:

The Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park

The Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park will be open for shopping and food. Its 17,000-square-foot ice-skating rink that’s free to use (if you bring your own skates) is the highlight, while more than 100 shopping and food kiosks are there to peruse—all at one of the best NYC parks. You can even go ice-less curling and rent an igloo to sip on warm drinks this year!

The Arts of Buddhism at The Brooklyn Museum

As of January 21, the Brooklyn Museum will have a new gallery dedicated to the Arts of Buddhism collection. It’ll juxtapose artwork with nearly 70 objects from 14 countries dating from the second century C.E. to the early 2000s. Many of the works on display will be sculptural depictions of Buddhas and other enlightened figures, as well as ritual tools and ornaments made for use in Buddhist temples and a small selection of paintings. Among the objects newly on view are several of the Museum’s masterpieces, including a rare eighth-century image of the goddess Tara from Odisha, India; a Chinese silver reliquary dedicated by a Buddhist monk and his mother; and a gilt-bronze seated Buddha from southern China. There are also at least nineteen objects that have never before been on display at the museum. In addition, as part of the inaugural installation of the gallery, a pair of important Japanese mandala paintings, dating to the fourteenth century, will be on view for the first time in twenty-five years.

Sharks at AMNH

  • Until Apr 1, 2022

This immersive new exhibit takes visitors “underwater” to meet some of the ocean’s diverse shark species, including the biggest predatory fish of all time—the megalodon. “Sharks” at AMNH introduces the “toothy, fearsome predators” that have captured the public’s imagination through films like Jaws and Deep Blue Sea and dives deep into the incredible diversity of this ancient group of fishes through dozens of life-size models (some as long as 33 feet) in an ocean-like gallery with wave-like lighting that moves across the floor. Once visitors enter the gallery, a 27-foot-long megalodon, dubbed the “Tyrannosaurus rex of the seas,” model greets them with its mouth wide open as if it is about to feed on them. Here, its giant teeth and overall size set the tone for the super cool and interactive exhibit.

Jerry Schatzberg: 25th & Park

  • Until Mar 5, 2022

Get a glimpse inside New York photographer and director Jerry Schatzberg’s studio from the 1960s, where he shot some extraordinary portraits of icons such as Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Sharon Tate, Catherine Deneuve and Carmen De Lavallade. The studio was set up in 1957 a few steps from Fotografiska at 333 Park Avenue South and became the setting for Schatzberg’s playful portraiture that “betray his unquenchable, almost maniacal search for glamour, for glimmers that elevate the geniuses of his time out of their accomplishments and into a pictorially extraordinary ordinary.”

INterSECTS: Where Arthropods and Homo Sapiens Meet

  • Until Aug 13, 2022

Award-winning graphic novelist Peter Kuper’s intricate drawings of insects—bees, ants, cicadas, butterflies, silkworms, beetles, dragonflies, and more—show them “flying, crawling, and interacting with the various rooms of the Library’s 42nd Street building, where they will be showcased. “This bug’s-eye view of the building’s Beaux-Arts architectural details illuminates the iconic spaces in a completely original way.” Kuper has been working on an upcoming graphic novel, INterSECTS, and had the chance to explore the building and its rooms while they were empty during the pandemic. It was there that he realized that the building would be a perfect vehicle for his concept.

Viewers of his work can access commentary by experts online and via QR codes, such as Jessica Ware on dragonflies, Gene Kritsky on cicadas, Michael Engel on bees, Barrett Klein on scarab beetles, and Mark W. Moffett on ants with Mexico’s leading poet/novelist, Homero Aridjis, reading his poem “A Una Mariposa Monarcha.”  The audio talks are accompanied by the insect-inspired music of David Rothenberg. All of this plus downloadable coloring book art will be available on January 7 at nypl.org/intersects.

“There are roughly 10 quintillion insects on Earth,” Kuper says. “They touch everything we do in our daily lives, our economy, our very survival. Yet most of us barely notice their existence except to swat them away. I have been fascinated with these amazing creatures my whole life, so to be able to do research at the Library investigating them and how they’ve interacted with humans over the centuries was a true passion project. To then have the opportunity to incorporate the Library’s iconic spaces into that artwork is incredibly meaningful. I hope visitors not only enjoy the images and see the Library anew, but they’ll particularly view arthropods through a new lens, and appreciate the beauty and mystery of these tiny giants that are essential to our planet and our lives.”

  • City Life

One of the most fun things to do at the annual Bryant Park Winter Village is to ride those bumper cars on ice and, as of this Friday, the slick autos will be back for you to play around with. Woohoo! Available between 2pm and 8pm on weekdays and 11am to 5pm on weekends, the cars will be in the park through Sunday, February 27—so you’ve got a little over a month to have some fun on the ice. New this year, the Bank of America Winter Village announced that it will also host special late-night rides—but no specifics on that just yet.

If you’re looking for a cute (and warm!) dining destination now that the weather has officially turned cold and the first snow hit the city, consider reserving one of the cozy yurts that have been set up outside of Fairfax, the all-day cafe and bar in Greenwich Village. Although the fabulous tents aren’t anything new, it is the first year that the eatery has decided to operate them on its own (in the past, they’ve been part of an experiential partnership with American Express).  There are three total yurts on premise and reservations for groups of up to four are available right here (just make sure to select the “yurt dining” option). The best part: diners can order from the spot’s a la carte menu, not having to worry about meeting a minimum or indulging in a prix-fixe offering. Fairfax’s sister restaurant, Jolene in NoHo, is also currently operating four heated yurts that you can reserve.

We’ve included the best events in January, from can’t-miss happenings to popular New York attractions. From new museum exhibits to celebrating Martin Luther King Day, check out these events and more sensational things to do in the winter.”

Here are a few of my faves:

Its 17,000-square-foot ice-skating rink that’s free to use (if you bring your own skates) is the highlight, while more than 100 shopping and food kiosks are there to peruse—all at one of the best NYC parks. INterSECTS: Where Arthropods and Homo Sapiens Meet

  • Midtown West Jan 7-Aug 13, 2022

Jerry Schatzberg: 25th & Park

  • Gramercy Jan 14-Mar 5, 2022

Get a glimpse inside New York photographer and director Jerry Schatzberg’s studio from the 1960s, where he shot some extraordinary portraits of icons such as Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Sharon Tate, Catherine Deneuve and Carmen De Lavallade.
