Things to Do This Week in NYC (2/22-2/27)

by Ethan Wolff — cityguideny

(2/22-2/27) “Looking for what to do in NYC this week and weekend? The city continues to bounce back. Vaccinations are required for much of indoor life here (meaning you can feel safer if you head in to a restaurant, museum, or gym), but there’s also tons to do out of doors. Read on for more in-person reopenings, festivals, pop ups, and other things to do in NYC this week.

Here are just three things to do:

THE ORCHID SHOW RETURNS

orchid show bronx

Image: The New York Botanical Garden.

Spring flowers are back in NYC as The Orchid Show: Jeff Leatham’s Kaleidoscope opens at The New York Botanical Garden. This year’s show is a reprise of a 2020 version cut short by Covid; it features the dazzling creations of Jeff Leatham, famed artistic director of the Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris, and floral designer to the stars. Leatham’s bold vision unfolds through installations that transform galleries in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory into distinct color experiences, as with the turn of a kaleidoscope. Design surprises employ thousands of orchids, both rare and iconic. The garden is just a 20-minute Metro-North ride from Grand Central Terminal and also features more than one million plants. The show opens on Saturday.

SKATING TO BROADWAY STARS

wollman rink nyc

Locations don’t come much more prime than Wollman Rink in Central Park. A new operator is bringing in fresh ideas, including some creative activations. The Broadway Sings live band and six insanely talented Broadway stars will celebrate the music of the ultimate queens of pop: Beyoncé and Lady Gaga on Thursday. Throughout the night, you’ll hear new arrangements of hits like “Single Ladies,” “Irreplaceable,” “You and I,” and “Poker Face.”

SCHEDULED TO APPEAR:

Kate Rockwell (Mean Girls)
Corey Mach (Kinky Boots)
Zak Resnick (Mamma Mia)
Jillian Mueller (Pretty Woman)
Jackie Burns (If/Then, Wicked)
Brennyn Lark (Les Miserables)

And this Saturday you can get your spring on early with the Coney Island Polar Bear Club and a beach-themed Polar Skate.

GOLDEN GIRLS BINGO

In honor of the 100th anniversary of Betty White’s birth, Brooklyn’s Crystal Lake will celebrate her life with a Rose Nylund-themed night of bingo Thursday night. Win prizes while watching Golden Girls reruns—the best Rose-inspired sweater wins an extra-special prize. There will be cake

The best things to do in the winter in NYC

The weather outside might be freezing, but the best things to do in winter in NYC will keep you cheery.

Written by Shaye Weaver — TONY

“New York City doesn’t shut down in the winter, thank you very much! We’re just turning up the heat on all there is to do here! There are a lot of incredible things to do all season long during the snowiest time of year, including great museum exhibits and winter pop-ups to keep this town entertained. For something a bit more snuggly, check out the free fireplaces to cozy up by in NYC or lounge inside a sauna at one of the best spas. Don’t forget that New York is absolutely gorgeous in winter, so bundle up and go out to admire all the snow-covered trees at the best NYC parks, and enjoy fun winter celebrations.”

Everything Fun You Can Do in NYC This Weekend

New art exhibits, Black History Month treats, and one more Lunar New Year celebration.

By Juliet Izon Thrillist

“Three-day weekends are always a blessing, but when they happen in February they’re especially well-timed. So, if you’re one of the lucky ones who scored this Monday off, we have plenty to keep you busy for the next few days. And if you’re working, don’t worry: we found some fun stuff you can cram in between Zoom sessions.

This weekend, there are multiple new art shows from some of the country’s most dynamic artists, a new brunch menu worth traveling for, and a bar that will transport you straight to 1982 (in a good way). Read on for everything fun you can eat, drink, and do this weekend in NYC.”

Taste Japan’s unofficial national fish at some of the city’s best spots

Weekend-long
Various locations
Sushi lovers will be intimately familiar with hamachi (which also pops up on menus as Japanese amberjack, yellowtail, or buri). The pinkish-white fish is especially delicious in wintertime, when the meat has a higher fat content. So, whether you’re a professed fan or interested in learning more about one of Japan’s favorite fishes, this weekend is a great one to taste it. JFOODO, a group which promotes Japanese food internationally, is running a month-long promotion for the fish at famed restaurants like Aquavit, Contra, Llama San, and Veranda. Each chef created a special hamachi dish—from crudo to oil-poached—that exemplifies how the fish can be used in cuisines from around the globe.
Cost: Varies

Grab one of NYC’s best English muffins during a rare pop-up

Weekend-long
West Harlem
Shuna Lydon’s Seabird Bakery has quickly become one of NYC’s most beloved under-the-radar businesses. While snagging her famed English muffins has generally meant waiting for one of her weekly deliveries, it’ll be much easier over the next few weeks. Seabird is popping up at Manhattanville Market through the end of the month and serving not only the cult-favorite Sourdough English Muffins, but also Russian Honey Cake, Salted Brown Butter Rice Krispie Treats, and tiny pots of her marmalades and jams in flavors like Spiced-Pineapple Clementine and Sour Cherry.
Cost: Pastries from $5

Time travel to the Miami Vice-era at this new bar

Weekend-long
Lower East Side
It’s stating the obvious that we’re sick of winter. But if a trip to Florida just isn’t in the cards for you this holiday weekend, we found the next best thing. Sally Can Wait in the Lower East Side is a new bar with a cheeky Miami Vice vibe (and obvious Oasis reference in the name), plus plenty of frozen drinks and the (self-professed) best cubano sandwich in NYC. We recommend trying, of course, the Miami Vice cocktail, a mash-up that is half pina colada, half strawberry daiquiri.
Cost: Drinks from $15

Catch a powerful new exhibit from this influential artist and organizer

Weekend-long
Lower East Side
Faith Ringgold is a true multi-hyphenate. The Harlem-born artist is also a published author, educator, and community organizer, with a career that spans six decades. This week, The New Museum opens the most comprehensive show ever of Ringgold’s work in a breathtaking exhibit that spans three floors of the building. We were especially taken with her fabric works, like the soft sculptures and story quilts; they are equal parts heart-wrenching, uplifting, and awe-inspiring.
Cost: Tickets from $18

Mask up (not, not that kind) for this one-of-a-kind immersive show

Weekend-long
Chelsea
Over the last few months, we’ve excitedly welcomed back nearly all of NYC’s most beloved theatrical shows. But Sleep No More, an immersive show based on Macbeth that’s performed inside a massive warehouse, was unable to reopen until this month. Now that it’s finally back, we recommend you scoop up tickets pronto: there is no other show remotely like it in NYC. If you’ve never been, we won’t spoil the surprises, but do know you’ll be wearing a kinda-spooky mask (plus, of course, your face mask) during the whole performance. Be sure to get there early to grab a drink at the venue’s rooftop oasis, Gallow Green.
Cost: Tickets from $99

Explore this multidisciplinary artist’s new show at the Park Avenue Armory

Weekend-long
Upper East Side
The Park Avenue Armory’s Wade Thompson Drill Hall is one of NYC’s most breathtaking venues to see art or performances. The soaring space alone is jaw dropping, but when an artist like Rashaad Newsome mounts one of his interdisciplinary shows, it almost feels as if you’re on another planet. Newsome’s latest installation, Assembly, is one of his most ambitious, combining a daytime exhibit featuring projection-mapped walls, holograms, and sculpture, with evening performances from an international cast of dancers, singers, and MCs, all inspired by vogue culture.
Cost: Exhibition tickets from $18; performance tickets from $40

Pick up a box of treats that commemorates Black History Month

Sunday, February 20, 12 pm-2 pm
Nolita
The Musket Room’s executive pastry chef, Camari Mick, is one of the city’s most innovative bakers. And this weekend, you can not only sample some of her beautiful confections, but those of her favorite chef friends as well. Mick has curated a Black History Month-themed box of treats that includes everything from her own black cake whoopie pies to sunflower-praline macarons to Ghanainan bread. Even better: all proceeds from the box go straight to the makers.
Cost: $80 per box

Celebrate Lunar New Year with the return of a famed parade

Sunday, February 20, 1 pm
Chinatown
One of the spectacular weekends to visit Chinatown all year is during the Lunar New Year parade, which hasn’t been staged in full-force since before COVID. The parade route starts on the corner of Mott and Canal Streets and the lively procession will wend its way through the neighborhood before ending near Sara D. Roosevelt Park. You can expect lively lion dances, classic cars, and plenty of food vendors along the route before grabbing a meal at one of Chinatown’s best restaurants.
Cost: Free to attend

Nurse your hangover with one of the city’s best new brunches

Sunday, February 20
West Village
One of our favorite new date-night spots, Jack & Charlie’s no. 118, is now one of our go-to Sunday brunch spots as well. The photogenic West Village restaurant just launched the menu a few weeks ago with dishes like the Chocolate Babka French Toast served with whipped cheesecake (!) and orange blossom maple syrup. And, if you’re looking for some hair of the dog, don’t miss the epic brunch cocktails, like the It’s All Greek to Me, made with gin, Greek yogurt, honey, lemon, and blackberry.
Cost: Dishes from $18

Justine Golatasecretnyc

“With the first month down in the new year, it’s time to fill that calendar with new things to do throughout February!

From visits to the botanical gardens that’ll gracefully guide us into the spring months, to romantic dinner dates or naming hissing cockroaches for V-Day—here are 65 things you can do in February as we all patiently await springtime.”

Here are just a few of my faves:

Take in a stunning concert by candlelight

The wildly popular Fever Originals Candlelight series is hosting an incredible selection of intimate concerts that are perfect for this romantic month! Enjoy all the glorious views of the city at one of these remarkable concerts featuring Edith Piaf’s best hits to Louis, Stevie, & more! Rendering of this year’s “Kaleidoscope” show. NYBG

The 19th annual Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Garden returns on February 26th. Following a much smaller show in 2021, this year’s show is set to be one of their greatest yet! Catch vibrant colors in a kaleidoscopic pattern similar to the 2020 show (that had to end early due to the pandemic) but reimagined to be better than ever! NYC events in February 2022

The best NYC events in February 2022 range from Valentine’s Day dates to epic winter fun

Written by Shaye WeaverTONY

‘In the winter doldrums of February in NYC, after a money-sucking December and a resolution-filled January, it’s time to double down and really enjoy the winter with the best NYC events in February.

Our event calendar includes some of the best things to do in winter as well as some epic Valentine’s Day events. This month is also a good excuse to take advantage of our winter getaways list, so plan your escape from the city and keep your fingers crossed for a little bit of snow to add to the winter wonderland aesthetic.”

Here are a few of my faves:

NYC Restaurant Week

The twice-annual discount dining event NYC Restaurant Week offers cheap dining deals at more than 300 restaurants in New York. From trendy newcomers to fine-dining standbys, the event draws bargain-hunting New Yorkers to try out new restaurants and revisit old favorites serving cheap eats.

Broadway Week

From January 18 through February 13 get two-for-one tickets to several Broadway shows! Visit the Broadway ticket vendors Telecharge and Ticketmaster in advance to make sure that your accounts and credit cards there are up to date. Then, at 10am on January 11, go to Broadway Week website to peruse the list of participating shows and snatch up the best seats for the ones you want most.

Chinese New Year Parade

This month, Chinatown gets stormed by dragons, dancers and some of the best Chinese food the city has to offer in celebration of the Lunar New Year. But before you get lost in the bang of firecrackers, check out some of the best things to do in Chinatown, NYC. Brace yourself for what’s sure to be a wild celebration with the Chinese New Year Parade!

Bumper cars on the ice in Bryant Park!

One of the most fun things to do at the annual Bryant Park Winter Village is to ride those bumper cars on ice. Available between 2pm and 8pm on weekdays and 11am to 5pm on weekends, the cars will be in the park through Sunday, February 27—so you’ve got a little over a month to have some fun on the ice. You can book your ride right here. New this year, the Bank of America Winter Village announced that it will also host special late-night rides—but no specifics on that just yet.

Shake Rattle & Roll Dueling Pianos

Every Saturday night at 10pm, two piano men battle it out to prove who is truly the master of all 88 keys, with a playlist decided entirely by the audience. Whether you’re in the mood for Billy Joel, Christina Aguilera or current chart toppers, these pianists are up for the challenge. But they expect you to do your part by singing along, but from home. Find tickets and request songs here: bit.ly/SRRshows

Things to Do This Week in NYC (1/31-2/6)

by Ethan Wolff – cityguideny

(1/31-2/6) “Looking for what to do in NYC this week and this weekend? The city continues to bounce back. Vaccinations are required for much of indoor life here (meaning you can feel safer if you head in to a restaurant, museum, or gym), but there’s also tons to do out of doors. Read on for more in-person reopenings, festivals, pop ups, and other things to do in NYC this week.”

YEAR OF THE TIGER

chinese new year

Tuesday marks the beginning of Chinese New Year and you’ll find all kinds of ways to mark it in the city. Chinatown’s 24th Annual New Year Firecracker Ceremony & Cultural Festival takes place February 1st at Sara D. Roosevelt Park (the 24th Annual Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade & Festival is further in the month, on February 20th). Hudson Yards is bringing in traditional lion dances and ribbon twirling performances from The New York Chinese Cultural Center on Saturdays at 1pm, 3pm, and 5pm. The shows can be found Saturday, February 5th and 12th. They’ll have a nice photo op, too, in front of massive red lanterns wishing health and happiness. On February 5th, NYC institution Pearl River Mart will host a lunar new year celebration (above) at their new Chelsea Market location. Look for noodles, baos, kimbap, desserts, and bubble tea from co-host Very Fresh Noodles and Pearl River Mart Foods’ featured vendors: Mao’s Bao, Kimbap Lab, Tea & Milk, and Kitsby. Wan Chi Ming Hung Gar Institute Dragon and Lion Dance Team will be performing, tickets required. (And for all you Ox and Goat signs, congrats—this is a lucky year for you!)

UNRAVELLING 4000 YEARS OF JUGGLING

reflex jay gilligan

Friday marks the world premier of Reflex, a new show from master juggler and visual artist Jay Gilligan. Inspired by gravity and making use of Gilligan’s unique inventions, props, and robots, the performance reveals secrets of an ancient craft. The show is up for four weeks only, through February 19th, at theater space Mitu580 in Brooklyn.

NEW IMMERSIVE ART

trust artechouse

Head to the historic boiler room of Chelsea Market to experience the immersive art space ARTECHOUSE. You’ve never seen art like this before, as room-sized digital projections merge with sound design to create a cinematic experience. January 31st marked the opening of the new commission TRUST, a partnership with acclaimed Italian studio fuse*. The installation is a data-driven, (semi) real-time audiovisual exploration of how historical events have influenced trust, and how the presence or absence of trust can shift our perceptions. High-resolution projection and hyperreal immersive sound bring the exhibition to vivid life. Adding to the experience is ARTECHOUSE’s newly opened XR Bar. Inspired by elements of the installation, guests can sip on innovative cocktails that feature a unique XR activation powered by the ARTECHOUSE app. (Rendering pictured above.)

WINTER OUTING NYC

It may be the depths of winter, but this is one of the best times to be in New York City. You can get great deals on dining, theatre, and attractions through mid February. Select plays are offering two-for-one tickets via Broadway Week. During NYC Must-See Week you can get BOGO tickets to iconic museums, attractions, tours, and more. Winter Restaurant Week serves up discount prix-fixe lunches and dinners at hundreds of the city’s most popular restaurants. The savings for attractions and Restaurant Week run through Sunday, February 13th; Broadway Week has been extended an additional two weeks to Sunday, February 27th.

Clothesline bacon

The newly reopened David Burke Tavern is a modern American restaurant by award-winning celebrity chef David Burke. A stately townhouse setting showcases Burke’s creative, contemporary approach to classic fare—often with showstopping presentations. For Restaurant Week, you can enjoy three-course prix fixe specials. Burke’s famous Clothesline Maple Candied Bacon, above, is available as a table share starter. Also available: lobster dumplings, a crab cake pretzel raft, short rib cavatelli, and desserts like chocolate chip ice cream sliders.

VALENTINE’S GIFTING OUTSIDE THE BOX

mochidoki nyc

Mochidoki is a nationally renowned, New York-based mochi ice cream company, beloved for their imaginative Japanese-inspired desserts. Their interactive flagship in SoHo and their Upper East Side storefront are both getting in the Valentine’s Day spirit with a limited-edition flavor launch. Raspberry White Chocolate features raspberry ice cream accented with the sweet and delicate snap of chocolate curls. Replace your usual box of chocolates with this seasonal treat, or opt for a Signature Collection (with 12 bestselling flavors) a Vegan Signature Collection (with 6 oat and coconut milk based flavors), or a mix-and-match 4-piece or 24-piece box of favorites including strawberry, chocolate, and salted caramel. Outside the city? They ship nationally as well!

BUMPER CARS ON ICE

bumper cars on ice bryant park

The 20th season of the Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park is underway. In addition to the only free-admission skating rink in NYC, you’ll find Rink Deck shops and food and drink. For the latter, The Lodge by Prime Video provides an outdoor après skate escape where you can cozy up with bites, festive cocktails, and prime ice skater watching. Get ready for some demolition derby action, urban style, too. The Bumper Cars on Ice at Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park have returned, available 2-8pm on weekday afternoons and 11am-5pm on the weekends. New for this year’s iteration are late-night rides; dates to be announced. Slide, spin, and get out your aggressions through February 27th.

SNOWY WINTER WONDERLAND

The holidays may be in the rear view mirror but you can still embrace the season. The LES’s Loreley Beer Garden has just dropped a wintry pop up. There are two heated outdoor areas, including one of the largest gardens in the city out back. Hot drinks touch on Irish coffees, toddies, mulled wine, spiked hot cider, and bourbon hot chocolates with toasted marshmallows. Winter sangrias and seasonal craft beers are available as well, along with giant pretzels and warm beer cheese dip, schnitzels, cheesy spaetzle with bacon, and grilled Sausage Party platters. Snowy Winter Wonderland runs through March 6th; happy hours are available.

POLAR LOUNGE

Put your next date night on ice. Harriet’s Rooftop at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge has launched its first-ever Polar Lounge. Designed by Okamoto Studio, the experience features seating areas carved entirely from crystal-clear ice, cocktails served in ice glasses, and an ice 1 Hotel sculpture playing off the bar’s skyline views. The lounge is open to the public through the end of February.
